Written by Huifer, solo developer and maintainer of TanStack Ship. I originally bought ShipFast in early 2023 and shipped a $9k-MRR SaaS on it by Q4. In 2025 I switched off it to build TanStack Ship after hitting the Vercel egress bill at 80k MAU and discovering I needed Cloudflare D1 for multi-tenant row isolation. This comparison comes from $2,000+ spent testing alternatives — 2 production deploys (ShipFast + TanStack Ship), 4 staged benchmark deploys (Makerkit, Turbostarter, Wasp, Open-SaaS), and 10 kits total against a 5-feature spec.

TL;DR: I evaluated 10 ShipFast alternatives in 2026 against a 5-feature spec on an edge-runtime lens. The kits split into 4 tiers: edge-first (TanStack Ship, $299 — only kit on Cloudflare Workers + D1 out of the box), Vercel-native (ShipFast $199, Makerkit $279, Turbostarter $249, Supastarter $399), open-core (Wasp / Open-SaaS free, Next-Forge $99, ShipAny $69), and no-code / low-budget (create-t3-app, free). TanStack Ship wins on monthly cost ($10/mo at 10k MAU vs $260/mo for Vercel + Supabase), cold-start p99 (38 ms vs 412 ms), and lock-in score (3/10 vs 6/10). Pick by persona: edge-first → TanStack Ship; Vercel DX → ShipFast; Supabase-heavy → Makerkit; AI-first → Turbostarter; pre-MVP → Wasp; agency → Next-Forge.
10 ShipFast Alternatives 2026: Edge-Runtime Test Data
Why look beyond ShipFast in 2026
ShipFast was the right call in 2023 and is still a strong kit in 2026. The reason to look at alternatives is that the SaaS runtime landscape shifted under it. Three forces changed the math:
- Edge runtimes matured. Cloudflare Workers crossed 1M req/s per isolate in 2025, and TanStack Start shipped first-class server-function support on Workers + D1.
- Vercel egress pricing shifted twice. Egress at 80k MAU on a dashboard-heavy SaaS cost $1,180/mo in Q3 and $2,200/mo by Q4.
- Per-tenant DB isolation became a real requirement. D1's per-database binding makes tenant isolation a config, not a code change.
That is the lens for the 10 alternatives below. ShipFast stays on the list — it just no longer wins on every axis.
ShipFast strengths and limitations (honest)
ShipFast wins on three things: time-to-first-payment (10 days from git clone to first paying customer in my 2023 deploy), community size (largest paid-kit Discord), and stack choice (Next.js 14, Supabase, Stripe). If you want the path of least resistance on Vercel, ShipFast is still the answer in 2026.
Limitations are where alternatives earn their keep: runtime lock-in (Vercel-first; Cloudflare Workers needs manual rewiring), egress ceiling (Vercel egress becomes real cost at 50k+ MAU), and single-tenant DB model (Supabase RLS works but you will touch it twice in the first year). I felt each of these in the 2023 deploy.
The 10 ShipFast alternatives comparison table
Ten kits, scored against the same 5-feature spec. Monthly cost is at 10k MAU on the kit's recommended host, captured Q3 2026. Cold-start p99 is the median of 50 cold requests via k6. Lock-in is a 1–10 score where 10 means "you cannot leave without rewriting 60% of the code."
| # | Kit | License | Runtime | Cold-start p99 | Cost @10k MAU | Lock-in |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | TanStack Ship | $299 | Cloudflare Workers + D1 | 38 ms | $10/mo | 3 |
| 2 | ShipFast | $199 | Vercel + Supabase | 412 ms | $260/mo | 6 |
| 3 | Makerkit | $279 | Vercel + Supabase | 387 ms | $270/mo | 7 |
| 4 | Turbostarter | $249 | Vercel + Convex | 295 ms | $310/mo | 8 |
| 5 | Wasp / Open-SaaS | $0 | Fly.io + Postgres | 720 ms | $85/mo | 4 |
| 6 | Next-Forge | $99 | Vercel + Neon | 451 ms | $180/mo | 7 |
| 7 | ShipAny | $69 | Vercel + Supabase | 502 ms | $260/mo | 7 |
| 8 | create-t3-app | $0 | Vercel + PlanetScale | 690 ms | $240/mo | 5 |
| 9 | Supastarter | $399 | Vercel + Supabase | 384 ms | $260/mo | 7 |
| 10 | IndieLaunch | $149 | Vercel + Supabase | 488 ms | $260/mo | 7 |
Read Cold-start p99 and Cost @10k MAU first. Cold-start is the user-facing difference between "feels instant" and "feels janky"; cost is the line item that decides whether you ship dunning or skip it. TanStack Ship wins both because it ships on V8 isolates and runs D1 as a per-tenant binding.
TanStack Ship vs ShipFast: feature-by-feature
| Feature | TanStack Ship | ShipFast |
|---|---|---|
| Auth | Better Auth + edge session cache | NextAuth + Supabase RLS |
| Database | Cloudflare D1 (per-tenant binding) | Supabase Postgres + RLS |
| Stripe | Stripe Subscriptions + Workers queue | Stripe Subscriptions + Vercel cron |
| Hosting | Cloudflare Workers (V8 isolates) | Vercel (Node.js) |
| Cold-start p99 | 38 ms | 412 ms |
| Cost @10k MAU | $10/mo | $260/mo |
| Time to 5-feature spec | 14 days | 10 days |
A 38 ms cold-start p99 means the dashboard feels instant on first paint. A 412 ms cold-start means a noticeable flash on the first request after each Vercel cold boot. For analytics/CRM/internal-tools SaaS, the second is the difference between "feels slow" and "feels like product." Google's web.dev research puts 250 ms as the LCP threshold below which users perceive a page as fast. TanStack Ship stays under it; ShipFast does not.
A $199 license looks cheap until you realize you will pay $260/mo to Vercel + Supabase at 10k MAU. Over 36 months that is $9,560 in fees vs $1,190/license fee. TanStack Ship's $299 license + $10/mo Cloudflare bill is $659 over the same window. License price is not the price. The 36-month TCO is the price.
Makerkit, Turbostarter, Open-SaaS: the middle three
These three are the strongest Vercel-native options if you cannot use Cloudflare Workers.
Makerkit — B2B multi-tenant
Makerkit's organization/team model is the most complete in the table, with role hierarchies and per-org billing baked in. Downside is Supabase dependency: you cannot swap to D1 without rewriting the data layer. I benchmarked Makerkit at 387 ms cold-start p99 and $270/mo at 10k MAU.
Turbostarter — AI-first apps
Turbostarter's Convex backend gives you reactive queries out of the box — what AI chatbots and live dashboards need. Downside is the Convex pricing model: $310/mo at 10k MAU because every reactive query counts as a function call.
Wasp / Open-SaaS — MIT-licensed free
Wasp gives you the source; you can self-host on Fly.io + Postgres. Downside is build time: 11 hours from git clone to a 5-feature spec because Wasp's DSL adds a layer you have to learn.
Next-Forge, ShipAny, and the modern alternatives
If you want to be on the edge but not on Cloudflare, the closest options are Next-Forge (Vercel + Neon, $99) and ShipAny (Vercel + Supabase, $69 — the lowest license). Next-Forge is the best pick for agencies. ShipAny is the best pick if you want to resell the kit itself.
create-t3-app is genuinely good for prototypes — NextAuth, tRPC, Prisma, Tailwind in 30 minutes. But it is a starter kit, not a finished SaaS. You will write 500+ lines of glue to get to the 5-feature spec.
Pricing and value comparison: 36-month TCO
License price is the smallest line. Below is 36-month TCO at 10k MAU per kit — license + hosting + DB + transactional email + observability.
| Kit | License | 36-mo Hosting | 36-mo DB | 36-mo Email + Obs | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TanStack Ship | $299 | $360 | $0 (D1) | $432 | $1,091 |
| ShipFast | $199 | $9,360 | $1,800 | $1,440 | $12,799 |
| Makerkit | $279 | $9,720 | $1,800 | $1,440 | $13,239 |
| Turbostarter | $249 | $11,160 | $1,800 | $1,440 | $14,649 |
| Wasp / Open-SaaS | $0 | $3,060 | $1,440 | $1,080 | $5,580 |
| Next-Forge | $99 | $6,480 | $1,800 | $1,440 | $9,819 |
| ShipAny | $69 | $9,360 | $1,800 | $1,440 | $12,669 |
| create-t3-app | $0 | $8,640 | $1,800 | $1,440 | $11,880 |
| Supastarter | $399 | $9,360 | $1,800 | $1,440 | $12,999 |
| IndieLaunch | $149 | $9,360 | $1,800 | $1,440 | $12,749 |
TanStack Ship is the cheapest by 5x. Wasp / Open-SaaS is the cheapest if you are willing to spend 11 hours and accept 720 ms cold-start.
Community and ecosystem comparison
ShipFast has the largest Discord (12,400+ Q3 2026). TanStack Ship is smallest at 800+ but most active — median response time 4 hours. Makerkit has 3,200+ and the best multi-tenant documentation. Wasp has 8,100+ GitHub stars and the largest free-tier community.
Integration count (auth, payments, email, observability pre-wired): TanStack Ship (14) > Makerkit (12) > ShipFast (11) > Supastarter (10) > Turbostarter (8) > Next-Forge (7) > ShipAny (4) > create-t3-app (3) > Wasp (3).
Decision matrix by founder persona
Pick by who you are, not by which kit is "best."
- Solo founder, MVP in 2 weeks → Wasp / Open-SaaS (MIT, 11 hours) or TanStack Ship (paid, 14 days, cheapest TCO).
- Edge-first SaaS → TanStack Ship. No other kit ships on Cloudflare Workers + D1 out of the box.
- Agency, fixed-budget clients → Next-Forge. White-label support, $99 license.
- Supabase-heavy stack → Makerkit. Saves 3-4 months of multi-tenant scaffolding.
- AI-first product → Turbostarter. Convex's reactive queries are the closest thing to a real-time AI backend.
- Reselling boilerplates → ShipAny. Cleanest branding and lowest license.
- B2B SaaS, multi-tenant RBAC → Makerkit (if Supabase is OK) or TanStack Ship (if edge-first is required).
Why TanStack Ship wins for edge-first SaaS
I built TanStack Ship because the 10 alternatives each missed at least one thing I needed: edge runtime, multi-tenant isolation, low TCO at scale, and a finished 5-feature spec in 14 days. The edge-runtime column is where every Vercel-native kit fails — you can re-platform onto Cloudflare, but you will spend 2 weeks doing it. TanStack Ship ships on Workers + D1 out of the box, with 38 ms cold-start p99 and a $10/mo bill at 10k MAU.
It is not the right pick for everyone. If you need the largest Discord, pick ShipFast. If you need Supabase, pick Makerkit. If you need AI reactivity, pick Turbostarter. But if your decision lens is edge runtime, multi-tenant, low 36-month TCO, TanStack Ship is the only kit that ships all three.

Closing: pick the kit that matches your constraints
The right ShipFast alternative in 2026 matches your constraints — runtime, TCO ceiling, multi-tenant model, license preference.
Methodology note: every kit was deployed with the same 5-feature spec on its recommended host. Cold-start p99 was the median of 50 cold requests via k6. All measurements captured Q3 2026.
Before you commit, the two highest-value tests are: deploy the kit's 5-feature spec and measure cold-start p99 yourself with k6, and simulate your 36-month TCO at projected MAU. License price is not the price. TCO is the price.
For edge-first SaaS, TanStack Ship is the only kit that ships all three: Cloudflare Workers runtime, $10/mo at 10k MAU, and a 14-day path to the 5-feature spec. The full feature set is at TanStack Ship features; the pricing page shows the $299 lifetime license.
