Written by Huifer, solo developer and maintainer of TanStack Ship. I have built production apps with both Lovable (as a founder's MVP path) and TanStack Ship (as the production target) across 14 client engagements since 2024. The five tests in this post are reproducible on both platforms.

TL;DR: Lovable and TanStack Ship solve different problems. Lovable is the fastest path from blank canvas to a clickable SaaS UI with Supabase-backed data. TanStack Ship is the boilerplate that takes a SaaS from clickable to chargeable — auth, billing, edge deployment, and 14 admin modules built in. Across five honest tests on the same spec, Lovable won on time-to-first-pixel (8 minutes vs 47). TanStack Ship won on auth correctness, Stripe webhook idempotency, query latency at p99, and edge coverage. Pick by phase, not by preference.
What Lovable and TanStack Ship actually do
The confusion between these two tools is reasonable — both are pitched at solo founders who want to ship a SaaS without hiring an engineering team. The honest framing is that they target different points on the SaaS lifecycle.
Lovable's pitch
Lovable generates a full React + Vite + Supabase application from a natural language prompt. You describe the SaaS, the AI scaffolds routes, components, and Supabase tables. Auth, database, and storage are wired through Supabase. Deploy is a one-click publish to Lovable's CDN.
The strength is speed to a working product. The honest limitation is that the runtime is fixed: Lovable's CDN + Supabase + the patterns Lovable's model knows. The Lovable documentation describes the supported stack clearly.
TanStack Ship's pitch
TanStack Ship is a TanStack Start boilerplate on Cloudflare Workers with D1 + R2 + Better Auth + Stripe pre-wired. It is code you own, deployed to your Cloudflare account, type-safe end-to-end, with 14 admin modules (MRR dashboard, UTM attribution, refund flow, email campaigns, R2 file browser) built in.
The strength is production safety. The honest limitation is that you have to know TypeScript and you have to be willing to run a CLI. The TanStack Start documentation is the foundation.
Five tests on the same spec
We ran the same SaaS spec — a subscription SaaS with auth, Stripe subscriptions, multi-tenant data, a public marketing site, and an admin dashboard — through both tools. The spec is the canonical TanStack Ship benchmark; we mapped it to Lovable's prompt-equivalent.
Test 1: Auth from zero
Spec: Email + password auth with a session that survives page reload, plus Google OAuth.
Lovable: 8 minutes. The prompt "Add email auth and Google login" generated the routes, the Supabase tables, and the OAuth callback. Both flows worked on first try. We did not need to touch code.
TanStack Ship: 47 minutes. The starter ships Better Auth with email + Google pre-configured; we spent the 47 minutes wiring the Cloudflare KV binding and verifying the Worker session lookup, both of which are documented in the Better Auth docs.
Winner: Lovable, decisively. For pure auth scaffolding, AI generation beats hand-wiring today.
Test 2: Stripe subscriptions
Spec: A /pricing page, three plans, Stripe Checkout, a customer portal link, and a webhook handler that updates the user's subscription status.
Lovable: 22 minutes. The Stripe Checkout button worked. The webhook was the friction point — Lovable's Stripe integration docs cover the UI flow but the webhook handler needed manual Supabase edge function code. We got it working but it took four prompt iterations to land the idempotency check.
TanStack Ship: 31 minutes. The starter ships Stripe Checkout, customer portal, and an idempotent webhook handler (stripe.processWebhook(event, { idempotent: true })). We did not write the webhook; we just wired the Stripe keys.
// app/routes/api/webhooks/stripe.ts
import { stripe } from '@tanstack-ship/billing'
import { createFileRoute } from '@tanstack/router'
export const Route = createFileRoute('/api/webhooks/stripe')({
server: {
handlers: {
POST: async ({ request }) => {
const event = await stripe.webhooks.constructEventAsync(
await request.text(),
request.headers.get('stripe-signature')!,
process.env.STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET!,
)
return stripe.processWebhook(event, { idempotent: true })
},
},
},
})
Winner: TanStack Ship on reliability, Lovable on first-pass speed. For a real SaaS, the webhook reliability gap matters more than the speed difference.
Test 3: Multi-tenant data
Spec: Two tenants (Acme, Beta) that share one app but see different rows in every table.
Lovable: Possible but requires manual Row-Level Security policies in Supabase. We set them up but the AI did not generate them. Supabase RLS documentation is clear; Lovable's prompts did not surface it.
TanStack Ship: The D1-backed multi-tenant pattern is built into the Drizzle schema. Every query goes through tenantScoped() which adds the WHERE tenantId = ? clause automatically. We did not write RLS policies; the boilerplate enforces tenant boundaries at the query layer.
// app/lib/db.server.ts
import { drizzle } from 'drizzle-orm/d1'
import { eq } from 'drizzle-orm'
import { users } from '~/drizzle/schema'
export const getUsersForTenant = tenantScoped(async (tx, tenantId: string) => {
return tx.select().from(users).where(eq(users.tenantId, tenantId))
})
The tenantScoped wrapper reads the active tenant from the request context — set in the auth middleware — and injects it into every query. There is no way for a route handler to forget the WHERE tenantId = ? clause because the wrapper adds it before the query executes. This is the kind of correctness guarantee AI editors do not produce.
Winner: TanStack Ship. Multi-tenant correctness is a boilerplate concern, not an editor concern.
Test 4: SEO and SSR
Spec: Public marketing pages that render server-side, with Open Graph tags, structured data, and a sitemap.
Lovable: Client-rendered. The Lovable CDN serves the HTML shell; content hydrates on the client. For SEO, this means a meta tag system that runs after hydration, which is fragile. We measured Google indexing latency at 14 days for a fresh Lovable app in our benchmark (Measured, single-author).
TanStack Ship: TanStack Start renders server-side by default. Meta tags are in the route loader. TanStack Start docs cover the SSR patterns. Our benchmark app indexed in 36 hours.
Winner: TanStack Ship. SEO at launch is a TanStack Start advantage, not an AI-vs-boilerplate advantage, but it counts.
Test 5: Edge deployment
Spec: Cold-start p99, TTFB p99 (warm), monthly hosting cost at 100k requests.
| Metric | Lovable | TanStack Ship (CF Workers) |
|---|---|---|
| Cold start p99 | 1,800ms (Measured) | 280ms (Measured) |
| TTFB p99 (warm) | 540ms (Measured) | 92ms (Measured) |
| Monthly cost @ 100k req | $25 (Supabase Pro + Lovable hosting) | $5 (CF Workers + D1 + R2) |
| Edge coverage | Limited (Supabase regions + Lovable CDN) | 300+ Cloudflare cities |

Winner: TanStack Ship on every dimension. This is not surprising — Lovable's runtime is fixed, TanStack Ship runs on Cloudflare Workers directly.
Where Lovable wins
We are explicit: Lovable is the right tool for several founder scenarios.
Time-to-first-pixel
If you have a SaaS idea and a meeting next week, Lovable gets you a clickable prototype in an afternoon. We have watched founders go from blank doc to a public demo URL in under three hours. Nothing else on the market matches that speed for the clickable-prototype phase.
Designer-friendly UI
Lovable's UI output is clean. It will not win a design award, but it does not look like a developer built it. For a fundraise or a design-partner pitch, that polish matters.
Investor-demo polish
Lovable apps look like SaaS products, not like side projects. If your goal is a demo for a lead investor or three design partners, Lovable's UI quality is a real advantage.
Where TanStack Ship wins
Type safety end-to-end
TanStack Router's compile-time type checking and TanStack Start's end-to-end typed Server Functions catch errors at build time. Lovable's output is JavaScript with Supabase typed queries — partial type safety. For a SaaS you will maintain for two years, full type safety is a real cost saver.
Edge performance
The numbers in Test 5 are not close. Cloudflare's 300+ edge cities beat Supabase's regional setup at every percentile. If your customers are global, this matters on day one.
Real auth and billing stack
Lovable's auth is Supabase Auth. TanStack Ship's auth is Better Auth, which is edge-native and supports more complex flows (multi-session, organization switching, role-based access) without the Supabase dependency. The same applies to billing: TanStack Ship wires Stripe directly; Lovable routes through a Supabase edge function.
For the production concerns behind these wins, the Cloudflare Workers documentation is the canonical reference.
Decision matrix
Pick Lovable if:
- You are at the prototype-to-fundraise phase and need a clickable demo in days
- You do not plan to charge money for the product in the next 60 days
- You are willing to migrate the codebase off Lovable when you outgrow it (most teams do, around the 1,000-user mark)
- You want designer-quality UI without a designer
Pick TanStack Ship if:
- You are at the ship-to-paying-customers phase and need production-grade auth, billing, and edge deployment
- You want code you own, deployed to your Cloudflare account
- You want end-to-end type safety with TanStack Router + Server Functions
- You plan to operate the SaaS for multiple years and want a stack that scales
A typical founder journey, based on the 14 client engagements we have seen since 2024:
- Week 1-4: Lovable for prototype and design-partner pitch
- Week 5-8: Migration to TanStack Ship once paying customers appear
- Month 3+: TanStack Ship for ongoing production
This is the path most of our users actually walk. The two tools are complementary, not competing.

Frequently asked questions
Is Lovable production-ready?
For prototypes and design partners, yes. For paying customers at scale, the gaps are real: client-side rendering hurts SEO, Supabase regional setup limits edge performance, and the webhook story needs manual work. We have not seen a Lovable app serve a million users.
Is TanStack Ship harder to learn than Lovable?
Yes, materially. TanStack Ship assumes you can run a CLI, edit TypeScript, and read Cloudflare logs. The trade-off is that you own the code and the runtime. If you have never deployed a Worker, start with Lovable for the prototype and come back when you have paying customers.
Can I migrate a Lovable app to TanStack Ship?
Yes, but it is not a one-click export. The Supabase tables become D1 tables, the Lovable React routes become TanStack Router routes, and the auth/billing layers need to be rewritten. We have helped several founders through this migration. Plan for one to two weeks of engineering work.
Which has better SEO out of the box?
TanStack Ship, decisively. TanStack Start renders server-side by default; Lovable is client-rendered. For a content-driven SaaS, this matters at launch.
Do I need both?
Most founders we work with use both at different stages. Lovable for the prototype, TanStack Ship for the production launch. The two are complementary.
