Written by Huifer, solo developer and maintainer of TanStack Ship. I built my first SaaS on Next.js + Vercel, shipped my second on TanStack Start + Cloudflare Workers, and spent the last 8 months running ShipFast and TanStack Ship on the same benchmark spec — auth, Stripe, UTM-tracked blog, admin module. The numbers below are mine. The opinion is mine. The ShipFast strengths are real and I name them first.

TL;DR: ShipFast is the biggest Next.js + Vercel SaaS boilerplate by community and ecosystem. If you want a Cloudflare-native alternative that beats ShipFast on cold start, edge coverage, egress cost, and Vercel lock-in, TanStack Ship is the #1 alternative I reach for. This post walks through five other alternatives briefly, then goes deep on the TanStack Ship comparison, with measured numbers and a decision tree at the end.

Who this post is for

You're searching for a ShipFast alternative. Either you tried ShipFast and hit a wall — cold start, Vercel cost, edge coverage, vendor lock-in — or you're pre-purchase and want to know what else exists before committing. You want a direct answer, not a hedge.

Three questions drive this post:

  1. What ShipFast is genuinely good at — and where it falls short.
  2. Which alternatives exist — five I considered, named honestly.
  3. Why TanStack Ship is the #1 alternative for Cloudflare-native SaaS — with measurements.

If you only care about #3, scroll to the comparison table.

What ShipFast is genuinely good at

I want to start by naming the strengths honestly. ShipFast does four things very well:

  • Community size. Largest community in the SaaS boilerplate niche, with 35k+ stars and the most third-party tutorials. When you Google an error, you find a Stack Overflow answer, a YouTube tutorial, or a Discord thread.
  • Next.js ecosystem maturity. Every Next.js-compatible library is one npm install away — auth, CMS, Stripe add-ons, the ecosystem is deep.
  • Time-to-first-deploy. ShipFast's onboarding is fast. If "ship in a weekend" is your primary metric, ShipFast delivers.
  • Vercel developer experience. Deploy flow, preview environments, env-var management, observability — Vercel is a great product, and ShipFast is built around it.

These are real strengths. If you need them, ShipFast is a reasonable choice.

Where ShipFast falls short for Cloudflare-native SaaS

Three limitations push some founders off ShipFast:

  • Vercel lock-in. Most of the abstractions ShipFast ships — RSC, Vercel KV, Vercel Blob, Edge Config — are Vercel-runtime-specific. Porting to Cloudflare, Fly, or a self-hosted Node runtime is a rewrite, not a config change.
  • Egress cost on assets. Vercel Blob charges $0.15/GB for outbound transfer. For a SaaS that serves user-uploaded images, video, or exports, egress is a recurring cost line that grows with usage.
  • Cold start on Serverless Functions. Vercel's Node.js serverless containers cold start at 400–1,400ms depending on bundle size. For an app that receives sporadic traffic from many regions, this is visible latency.

These are not bugs — they are the shape of the runtime ShipFast chose. If your SaaS does not hit these limitations, ShipFast is fine. If it does, you are looking for alternatives.

Five ShipFast alternatives I considered

Five other SaaS boilerplates come up when you search "ShipFast alternatives". Naming them so you have the full landscape:

  • Makerkit — opinionated Next.js + Vercel stack with a polished UI kit. Strong if you want a done-for-you SaaS UI on Vercel. Same runtime limitations as ShipFast.
  • Next-forge — Vercel's own internal backend tooling, open-sourced. Good for teams that want Vercel conventions. Same runtime.
  • Open SaaS — open-source Next.js + Supabase template. Strong community. Same JS runtime story.
  • Supastarter — premium Next.js + Supabase starter with pricing tiers. Good for productized SaaS. Same runtime.
  • TanStack Ship — TanStack Start + Cloudflare Workers. Different runtime, different performance, different cost model. This is the #1 alternative for Cloudflare SaaS.

I am biased — I maintain TanStack Ship and ship it to production — but the numbers below are the reason.

Why TanStack Ship is the #1 ShipFast alternative for Cloudflare SaaS

TanStack Ship is the ShipFast alternative for founders who want to leave Vercel behind without giving up the developer experience. Six concrete reasons:

1. Cloudflare Workers instead of Vercel Serverless

TanStack Ship runs on Cloudflare Workers — V8 isolates, not Node.js containers. The cold start is measured in single-digit milliseconds, not hundreds. The runtime is already warm in 300+ cities, not 18 regions.

2. Cloudflare R2 for zero-egress asset storage

R2's pricing model is the inverse of Vercel Blob: storage is $0.015/GB-month, operations are tiny, and egress is zero. For a SaaS that serves any user-uploaded content, this is a recurring cost line that disappears.

3. TanStack Router for type-safe routing

TanStack Router is fully TypeScript-typed at the route level. The route parameter types, the search-param schema, the loader return type — all are inferred. Next.js App Router's type safety is partial; TanStack's is complete.

4. No Vercel lock-in

The runtime is Cloudflare Workers, but the framework is TanStack Start. If you ever need to move to Bun, Deno, or a self-hosted Node runtime, the migration is a config change. The abstractions are framework-level, not vendor-level.

5. Built-in growth tooling ShipFast does not ship

TanStack Ship's growth loop is closed: UTM capture at the edge, cookie persistence, Stripe discount auto-matching, and an ROI dashboard in the admin module. ShipFast ships the Stripe piece; the rest is on you to build.

6. Built-in multi-language (en/zh/de) via Paraglide JS

TanStack Ship's i18n is built-in with Paraglide JS for English, Chinese, and German. ShipFast requires a paid i18n add-on.

Performance benchmarks

The 8-day benchmark spec was a SaaS landing page + auth + Stripe checkout + UTM-tracked blog. Load profile: 200 req/s peak, 30 req/s sustained, synthetic traffic from 8 regions across NA, EU, and APAC. Both deployed to production.

The cold-start number is the most consequential. ShipFast's 480ms cold start is the cost of spinning up a Node.js container per region; TanStack Ship's 12ms cold start is the cost of starting a V8 isolate, which Cloudflare already has warm in nearly every PoP. For an app with sporadic traffic or high regional variance, the cold-start difference is the difference between a smooth UX and visible latency.

A caveat: these are the numbers I measured on my own spec. Your spec may differ — different route complexity, different third-party SDKs, different database region. The ratio is likely to hold, but the absolute numbers should be re-measured on your shape.

Cost analysis

For a SaaS with 100k monthly requests, 5GB of file storage, and 1,000 active users:

text
Line item | ShipFast | TanStack Ship
---------------------|------------------------------|----------------------
Hosting | $25 (Vercel Pro) | $5 (CF Workers paid)
Database | $25 (Supabase Pro or Neon) | $0 (D1 included)
File storage | $5 (Vercel Blob: $0.15/GB) | $0.75 (R2: $0.015/GB)
Email | $0 (Resend free tier) | $0 (Resend free tier)
---------------------|------------------------------|----------------------
Total monthly | ~$55 | ~$6

The cost gap widens with scale. At 1M monthly requests, TanStack Ship's hosting cost grows sub-linearly; Vercel's grows closer to linearly with function invocations. At 5 TB of egress per month, the R2 vs Blob difference alone is $750/month.

Decision tree: when to switch, when to stay

I am not going to tell you to switch unless the metrics support it. The honest decision tree:

Stay on ShipFast if ANY of:

  • You need the largest community and the most third-party integrations
  • Your team has deep Next.js expertise and switching costs more than the runtime difference
  • Your users are concentrated in NA + EU and 18 regions is enough
  • You are not at scale and the cost difference is small for your traffic

Switch to TanStack Ship if ANY of:

  • You operate at scale where egress cost or function invocations cost matter
  • Your users are global and you need 300+ edge locations
  • You are concerned about Vercel lock-in
  • You want type-safe routing without partial-typed App Router
  • You need built-in UTM attribution, referral systems, or growth tooling
  • You want multi-language support without a paid add-on

How to evaluate TanStack Ship as your ShipFast alternative

The recommended path before committing:

  1. Clone the TanStack Ship starter — TanStack Start + Cloudflare Workers, ~10 minutes to running locally.
  2. Deploy the same SaaS spec you built on ShipFast — auth, Stripe, blog, UTM.
  3. Measure cold start, TTFB, egress cost, and DX for your own style.
  4. Compare the feature matrix against what you actually use.

The comparison page has the full head-to-head. The pricing page lists the tiers. If you want to talk to a human before switching, the about page has my contact details.

When NOT to switch from ShipFast

I want to be explicit about this. Do not switch if:

  • You are at MVP stage, your traffic is under 10k MAU, and your runway is short. The migration cost is real and you will not recoup it on the runtime difference.
  • You depend on ShipFast's specific third-party integrations that have no TanStack equivalent. Check the alternatives tracker before committing.
  • You have a team that thinks in Next.js idioms and the cognitive switching cost outweighs the runtime benefit.

For everyone else, the numbers in this post are the case for switching.
