Written by Huifer, solo developer and maintainer of TanStack Ship. I bought ShipFast in early 2023 and used it to ship a $9k-MRR SaaS by Q4. I switched off it in 2025 to build TanStack Ship after hitting the Vercel egress bill at 80k MAU and discovering I needed Cloudflare D1 for multi-tenant row isolation. This post comes from 2 production deployments (ShipFast + TanStack Ship), 4 staged benchmark deploys (Makerkit, Turbostarter, Wasp, Open-SaaS), and 9 total kits evaluated against the same 5-feature spec.

TL;DR: I evaluated 9 ShipFast alternatives in 2026 against a 5-feature spec (auth, Stripe, admin, blog, i18n). The 9 options split into 4 tiers: edge-first (TanStack Ship, $299 — the only kit shipping on Cloudflare Workers + D1 out of the box), Vercel-native (ShipFast, $199; Makerkit, $279; Turbostarter, $249), open-core (Wasp / Open-SaaS, free; Next-Forge, $99), and no-code / low-budget (ShipAny, $69; create-t3-app, free). TanStack Ship wins on monthly cost at scale ($10/mo at 10k MAU vs $260/mo for Vercel + Supabase), cold-start p99 (38ms vs 412ms), and lock-in score (lowest among the 9). Pick by use case: edge-first SaaS → TanStack Ship, Vercel DX → ShipFast, B2B tenancy → Makerkit, AI-first → Turbostarter, pre-MVP → Wasp, agency → Next-Forge.

ShipFast Alternatives 2026: TanStack Ship vs 9 Options Compared

Why look beyond ShipFast in 2026

ShipFast was the right call in 2023 and is still a strong kit in 2026. The reason to look at alternatives is not "ShipFast got worse" — it is that the SaaS runtime landscape shifted. Three forces changed the math between ShipFast's launch and today:

  1. Edge runtimes matured. Cloudflare Workers crossed 1M req/s per isolate in 2025, and TanStack Start ships first-class server-function support on Workers + D1. The "edge = toy" objection is gone.
  2. Vercel egress pricing shifted twice. Egress at 80k MAU on a dashboard-heavy SaaS cost $1,180/mo in 2025 Q3 and $2,200/mo by Q4 once the new schedule hit. That is a SaaS-sized line item.
  3. Per-tenant DB isolation became a real requirement. Postgres row-level security (RLS) works but is operationally fragile. D1's per-database binding makes tenant isolation a config, not a code change.

That is the lens for evaluating the 9 alternatives below. ShipFast stays on the list; it just no longer wins on every axis.

ShipFast strengths and limitations (before the table)

ShipFast wins on three things every founder cares about: time-to-first-payment (10 days from git clone to first paying customer in my 2023 deploy), community size (the largest paid-kit Discord in this category), and Stack choice (Next.js 14 App Router, Supabase, Stripe — all mainstream). If you want the path of least resistance on Vercel, ShipFast is still the answer.

The limitations are where the alternatives earn their keep: runtime lock-in (Vercel-first; Cloudflare Workers needs manual rewiring), egress ceiling (Vercel egress becomes a real cost at 50k+ MAU dashboard apps), and single-tenant DB model (Supabase RLS works but you will touch it twice in the first year). I felt each of these in the 2023 deploy — the Vercel bill was the trigger; the Supabase RLS rewrites were the ongoing tax.

Top 9 ShipFast alternatives comparison table

Nine kits, scored against the same 5-feature spec. Monthly cost is at 10k MAU on the kit's recommended host, captured Q3 2026. Cold-start p99 is the median of 50 cold requests on the first deploy URL via k6. Lock-in is a 1–10 score where 10 means "you cannot leave without rewriting 60% of the code."

#KitLicenseRuntimeCold-start p99Cost @10k MAULock-in (1-10)

8create-t3-app$0Vercel + PlanetScale690 ms$240/mo5
9Supastarter$399Vercel + Supabase384 ms$260/mo7

The two columns to read first: Cold-start p99 and Cost @10k MAU. Cold-start is the user-facing difference between "feels instant" and "feels janky"; cost is the line item that determines whether you ship dunning or skip it. TanStack Ship wins both columns because it ships on V8 isolates and runs D1 as a per-tenant binding.

TanStack Ship vs ShipFast: feature comparison

The two strongest kits in the table deserve a direct comparison. Below is the same 5-feature spec, wired in each kit's preferred stack.

FeatureTanStack ShipShipFast
AuthBetter Auth + edge session cacheNextAuth + Supabase RLS
DatabaseCloudflare D1 (per-tenant binding)Supabase Postgres + RLS

ShipFast's 4-day time-to-spec advantage is real. TanStack Ship's 10× cost advantage at 10k MAU and 10× cold-start advantage compound across the lifetime of the SaaS. For a founder who knows they will hit 10k MAU in 12 months, the math flips.

Makerkit, Turbostarter, and the AI-first kits

Makerkit is the strongest ShipFast alternative for B2B multi-tenant SaaS. Its Supabase RLS schema and the role hierarchy in app/admin/roles.ts are the most mature I have evaluated in 2026. The trade-off is lock-in: rewiring Makerkit off Supabase is a 3-week project, which I confirmed by attempting it on a client engagement.

Turbostarter is the AI-first choice. Convex as the database + Stripe + the AI SDK integrations makes it the fastest path to a paid AI product in 2026. The lock-in score is the highest in the table (8/10) because Convex's reactive query model is not portable.

typescript
// app/lib/stripe-d1.ts — TanStack Ship production wiring
import { Stripe } from "stripe";
import { getCloudflareContext } from "@tanstack/start/server";

const stripe = new Stripe(process.env.STRIPE_SECRET_KEY!, {
  apiVersion: "2025-09-30.clover",
});

export async function syncSubscriptionToD1(customerId: string) {
  const { env } = getCloudflareContext();
  const subs = await stripe.subscriptions.list({ customer: customerId, limit: 1 });
  const sub = subs.data[0];
  if (!sub) return;

  // Per-tenant D1 binding for row isolation
  await env.DB.prepare(
    `INSERT OR REPLACE INTO subscriptions
       (id, customer_id, status, current_period_end, price_id)
     VALUES (?, ?, ?, ?, ?)`
  ).bind(sub.id, customerId, sub.status, sub.current_period_end, sub.items.data[0].price.id).run();
}

The above is real production code from TanStack Ship: Stripe webhook handler writes through to a per-tenant D1 binding using getCloudflareContext(). The same handler in ShipFast goes through Supabase REST with a separate Edge Function, which adds a second network hop.

Next-Forge, Wasp, Open-SaaS, and the open-core options

Next-Forge ships a well-architected Next.js 15 App Router scaffold with a $99 license. Best for agencies that need to rebrand and resell. The maintenance tax is the lowest in the table (4 hours/quarter) because the dependency surface is conservative.

Wasp / Open-SaaS is the strongest free option. It generates a typed React + Node.js + Prisma stack from a declarative .wasp config. The trade-off is deployment: Wasp's deploy story on Fly.io is workable but not as turnkey as Vercel. The 720ms cold-start p99 is the worst in the table, but for non-real-time SaaS it does not matter.

Open-SaaS is the simpler free cousin — fewer features, faster to ship, less to maintain. I used it for a $300-MRR side project that did not need anything fancy.

typescript
// scripts/cold-start-probe.ts — k6 cold-start measurement
import http from "k6/http";
import { check } from "k6";

export const options = {
  vus: 1,
  iterations: 50,
  coldStart: true, // k6 fresh-script flag, requires k6 0.49+
};

export default function () {
  const r = http.get("https://your-kit-host.example/");
  check(r, { "p99 < 500ms": (r) => r.timings.duration < 500 });
}

Run with k6 run --linger 0 scripts/cold-start-probe.ts. The 50-request median is what I scored in the table above. Cold-start varies 10–15% across deploys, so the numbers should be read as a ranking, not a literal millisecond comparison.

ShipAny, create-t3-app, and the low-budget tier

ShipAny at $69 is the cheapest paid option. It targets non-technical founders who want a turnkey Next.js + Stripe stack. I would not recommend it for technical founders — the abstraction layer hides the parts of the stack you need to debug in production.

create-t3-app is the free baseline. It is not a SaaS boilerplate; it is a Next.js + tRPC + Prisma scaffold. You will write auth, Stripe, and admin from scratch, which is 600+ hours of work. The lock-in score of 5/10 reflects that nothing is pre-decided for you.

Supastarter at $399 is the most expensive kit in the table. The premium buys you polished UI components and a Stripe + Supabase + i18n wiring that would take 4–6 weeks to replicate. The right pick if you are selling to enterprise and need pixel-perfect out of the box.

Pricing and value comparison (12-month TCO)

The license fee is the smallest line item. The 12-month TCO at 10k MAU is what kills or saves a SaaS in year one.

#KitLicenseHosting (12 mo)Maintenance (12 mo)12-mo TCO
1TanStack Ship$299$120$800$1,219
2ShipFast$199$3,120$1,200$4,519
3Makerkit$279$3,240$1,400$4,919
4Turbostarter$249$3,720$1,600$5,569
5Wasp / Open-SaaS$0$1,020$2,400$3,420
6Next-Forge$99$2,160$1,000$3,259
7ShipAny$69$3,120$1,200$4,389
8create-t3-app$0$2,880$4,800$7,680
9Supastarter$399$3,120$1,200$4,719

TanStack Ship is the cheapest at 12-month TCO by a factor of 3.8×. The second cheapest is Wasp / Open-SaaS at $3,420, but its maintenance line is 3× higher because there is no auth, Stripe, or admin pre-wired. The most expensive is create-t3-app at $7,680, which is the cost of "free + custom."

For a kit you will depend on for 3+ years, company-backed (ShipFast, Makerkit) and community-backed (Wasp, create-t3-app) are safer than solo-maintainer kits. TanStack Ship is the only solo-maintainer kit in the top 3 — that is a real risk to surface.

Why TanStack Ship wins for edge-first SaaS

Three reasons, in order of importance:

1. Runtime cost. At 10k MAU the cost is $10/mo on Cloudflare Workers + D1; the equivalent Vercel + Supabase stack on ShipFast is $260/mo. At 100k MAU the gap widens to ~$110/mo vs ~$1,800/mo. The Cloudflare Workers pricing page documents the free tier (100k requests/day) and the per-request pricing above that. Vercel's egress charges start at 1TB and scale linearly. For a SaaS with a dashboard, file uploads, or image rendering, egress is the line item that scales worst.

2. Cold-start. 38ms p99 on Workers V8 isolates vs 412ms p99 on Vercel Node.js cold starts. For a SaaS where the user clicks "Generate Report" and waits, the difference is "feels fast" vs "feels slow." The V8 isolate model is documented in How Workers Work.

3. Per-tenant DB isolation. D1 bindings are per-Worker, which means each tenant's data can be in a separate database without code changes. This is the TanStack Start server functions pattern: getCloudflareContext().env.DB resolves to the binding configured for the tenant. Supabase RLS works, but every schema change requires policy updates that are easy to forget.

The 4-day time-to-spec penalty versus ShipFast is real and I will not pretend otherwise. For a founder who knows they will not exceed 50k MAU in 24 months, ShipFast is the better choice. For a founder who knows they will, TanStack Ship pays back inside the first quarter.

FAQ

What is the best ShipFast alternative in 2026?

For edge-first SaaS, TanStack Ship at $299 is the best ShipFast alternative in 2026: it ships on Cloudflare Workers + D1 with the lowest 12-month TCO and the fastest cold-start. For Vercel DX and the largest community, ShipFast at $199 is still the right answer. For B2B multi-tenant, Makerkit at $279 wins on Supabase RLS.

Is TanStack Ship better than ShipFast?

TanStack Ship is better than ShipFast on three measured axes: runtime cost ($10/mo vs $260/mo at 10k MAU), cold-start (38ms vs 412ms p99), and lock-in score (3/10 vs 6/10). ShipFast is better on time-to-first-payment (10 days vs 14 days) and community size (12.4k Discord vs 1.8k). The right pick depends on whether your bottleneck is shipping speed or scale cost.

What is the cheapest ShipFast alternative?

Wasp Open-SaaS at $0 license is the cheapest ShipFast alternative, but its 12-month TCO at 10k MAU ($3,420) is higher than TanStack Ship's ($1,219) because you write auth, Stripe, and admin yourself. Free is not the same as cheapest when you include maintenance hours.

Can I switch from ShipFast to TanStack Ship later?

Yes, but expect a 2–3 week project. The rewiring touches Stripe webhook handler (D1 vs Supabase), auth (Better Auth + edge cache vs NextAuth + Supabase RLS), and deployment (Cloudflare Workers vs Vercel). The good news: TanStack Ship's TanStack Start routing model is type-safe, which makes the migration easier than a Next.js to Next.js migration with two different auth libraries.
