Written by Huifer, solo developer and maintainer of TanStack Ship. I shipped three SaaS products with TanStack Ship in 60 days: a B2B analytics tool, a developer tool pricing dashboard, and a content analytics platform. I kept notes throughout. This is the honest review I would want to read before paying $149 for a boilerplate — what actually worked, what I had to fix, and what the template gets right and wrong compared to building from scratch or using a free alternative. I am the product creator. I will tell you what I would fix.

TL;DR: TanStack Ship is worth $149 for solo founders who want to ship a TanStack-based SaaS in days, not weeks. The DX is excellent, the bundle is lean, and the billing/Stripe integration is production-ready. The tradeoffs: the learning curve if you don't know TanStack libraries, and the ecosystem lock-in with Cloudflare deployment. This is the full 60-day review.

What I Shipped With TanStack Ship

AppTimelineComplexityNotes
B2B analytics dashboard4 daysMediumTanStack Query + TanStack Table + Stripe billing
Developer pricing tool2 daysLowTanStack Router + Stripe Checkout + custom pricing
Content analytics platform7 daysHighTanStack Query + SSR + webhook handling + multi-user

Average: 4.3 days from empty directory to paying customers. The fastest was 2 days for a pricing calculator with Stripe Checkout. The slowest was 7 days because I added SSR and multi-user auth from scratch.

What Works Well

Developer Experience

The DX is the strongest part of TanStack Ship. The TanStack ecosystem mental model is consistent across all libraries: hooks, query keys, typed routes. Once you understand TanStack Query (which has excellent documentation), the routing, table, and form libraries follow the same patterns.

bash
npx create-tanstack-app my-saas --template pro
cd my-saas
npm run dev

The project structure is clean. Everything has a place:

src/
  routes/ # TanStack Router file-based routes
  components/ # Shared UI components
  lib/ # Utilities, API clients
features/ # Feature modules (auth, billing, dashboard)
  server/ # Server-side logic

The feature module pattern means I copy the billing module from the first app to the second app and it works without modification.

Bundle Size

Bundle sizes from the three production apps, measured with vite-bundle-visualizer:

AppJS (min+gzip)CSSInitial load
Analytics dashboard68KB12KB1.2s
Pricing tool22KB8KB0.4s
Content platform91KB18KB1.8s

The pricing tool is tiny because it uses almost no features — just the shell, routing, and one API route. The analytics dashboard is larger because it includes TanStack Table and multiple chart components. All three are well within the "acceptable" range for SaaS apps.

Stripe Billing

The Stripe integration is production-ready. The template ships with:

  • Checkout Sessions for one-time and subscription payments
  • Webhook handling with idempotency and signature verification
  • Customer Portal for self-service billing management
  • Trial periods, coupons, and proration
  • Dunning configuration in the Stripe Dashboard

I have not had a single billing incident across the three apps. The webhook handler catches Stripe events, updates the database, and logs failures — it has survived production traffic without issues.

What Required Fixing

TanStack Start SSR Learning Curve

The first app I built with SSR took 2 extra days because I did not understand TanStack Start's server/client boundary model. The key insight I had to learn: server functions (createServerFn) run on the server only, return data to the client, and the client uses TanStack Query to manage that data. It is not a replacement for API routes — it is a different mental model.

Once the mental model clicked, SSR was fast. The second app with SSR took 1 day instead of 2.

Multi-user Auth Took Custom Work

The third app required multi-user teams with role-based access. TanStack Ship ships with single-user auth. I had to extend the auth module with:

  • Team membership table
  • Role-based permission checks in server functions
  • Invitation flow with email

This took a day. It is not in the template because multi-user patterns vary too much between apps.

Deployment Complexity

Deploying to Cloudflare Workers required learning Cloudflare's deployment model. The wrangler CLI, Workers KV, Durable Objects — these are different from Node.js deployment. I have a deployment guide in the TanStack Ship docs that walks through it, but it is not a 5-minute setup.

For teams without Cloudflare experience, this is a real cost. Next.js on Vercel is simpler to deploy.

Comparison: TanStack Ship vs Alternatives

TanStack ShipNext.js + CustomFree Boilerplate

The honest comparison: if you know TanStack, TanStack Ship saves 1–2 weeks of setup. If you don't know TanStack, the learning curve is part of the cost.

Who Should Use TanStack Ship

Use it if:

  • You know or want to learn TanStack libraries
  • You want Cloudflare deployment (Workers, KV, D1)
  • You need production-ready Stripe billing
  • You are building a B2B SaaS with data dashboards
  • You want SSR without fighting the framework

Don't use it if:

  • You need multi-user teams with complex RBAC out of the box
  • You want Node.js or Vercel deployment
  • You don't know React and don't want to learn TanStack
  • You need a marketplace or complex multi-vendor billing

The Scorecard

Overall: 8/10. The $149 is worth it for solo founders who know React and want to ship fast with the TanStack ecosystem.
