Written by Huifer, solo developer and maintainer of TanStack Ship. I cloned Supastarter for two client projects in 2024 before settling on TanStack Start + Cloudflare Workers. Over the past 30 days I cloned and deployed seven Supastarter alternatives on the same SaaS spec (auth, Stripe subscriptions, an admin table, a blog, and a deploy) and scored each on type safety, edge performance, DX, AI editor fit, and total cost at 100k MAU. Supastarter is the Next.js + Supabase incumbent but is not the best fit for every founder; this post names the winners by axis and tells you which to pick for which constraint.

TL;DR
After 30 days on the same SaaS spec across seven Supastarter alternatives:
- Type safety (highest weighted): TanStack Ship leads end-to-end via TanStack Router; Makerkit and Supastarter close the gap inside Next.js.
- Edge performance: TanStack Ship on Cloudflare Workers wins (38 ms p95 cold start, 300+ cities).
- DX for first deploy: Supastarter itself wins for Next.js + Supabase familiarity; ShipFast wins for raw time-to-deploy.
- AI editor fit: TanStack Ship ships 14 Agent Skills; the rest ship a README or
CLAUDE.md. - Cost at 100k MAU: TanStack Ship ~$10/mo; the rest cluster between $55 and $295/mo.
If you want the best Supastarter alternative for an edge-native, type-safe, Cloudflare-deployed SaaS, TanStack Ship is the #1 pick.
Who this post is for
You searched "Supastarter alternative" because either you tried Supastarter and hit a wall (Vercel cost, Next.js lock-in, Supabase coupling) or you are pre-purchase and want to know what else exists. You want a direct answer, not a hedge.
Three questions drive this post: (1) what Supastarter is genuinely good at and where each alternative beats it; (2) which Supastarter alternatives exist (seven I deployed and scored); (3) why TanStack Ship is the #1 alternative for edge-native SaaS, with measurements.
If you only care about #3, scroll to the scorecard.
What Supastarter is genuinely good at
- Dual framework support. Supastarter ships as both a Next.js version and a Nuxt version, from the same design language. If your team has Vue developers, this is the deciding factor.
- Stripe + Creem dual payment. Supastarter's billing module integrates Stripe and Creem side by side. Creem is a real product for a real audience (privacy-first EU payment provider); if your customers prefer it, Supastarter has it.
- Polished UI kit. The component library is more polished than most Next.js starters, and the marketing pages are tasteful.
- Supabase-native auth + database. Supabase Auth + Postgres + Storage is wired in by default; if your team knows Supabase, the mental model transfers.
If you are shipping a Next.js + Supabase SaaS this weekend on Vercel, Supastarter is a reasonable choice.
Where Supastarter falls short for edge-native SaaS at scale
- Vercel coupling. Supastarter's deployment target is Vercel. The cost structure scales linearly with traffic; at 8k+ MAU the Vercel + Supabase bill climbs past $200/month.
- Next.js framework lock-in. Supastarter's TypeScript safety stops at the Supabase client boundary. A column rename in Postgres is a runtime error, not a compile error.
- Supabase coupling. If your SaaS would benefit from D1 (read-heavy, modest writes, mostly Western users) you are paying Postgres prices for a workload that would be free on D1.
- Cold start on Vercel free/Pro. Without paying for Vercel Enterprise, cold starts on Supastarter cluster around 350ms p50.
Seven Supastarter alternatives I considered
Seven SaaS boilerplates come up when you search "Supastarter alternative":
- TanStack Ship — TanStack Start + Cloudflare Workers. Different runtime, different cost model. The #1 alternative for edge-native SaaS.
- Makerkit — Next.js + Supabase. Polished UI kit, deeper B2B tenancy than Supastarter.
- ShipFast — Next.js + Vercel. The incumbent for fastest-first-deploy Next.js SaaS.
- Next-forge — Vercel's own internal backend toolkit, open-sourced as a Turborepo monorepo.
- Turbostarter — Next.js + Turso. LibSQL at the edge, multi-package.
- Wasp / Open SaaS — open-source Wasp framework + React + Node + Postgres.
- create-t3-app — T3 (Next + tRPC + Prisma) free starter.
I am biased — I maintain TanStack Ship and ship it to production — but the numbers below are the reason.
Scorecard: seven Supastarter alternatives ranked
The same SaaS spec was cloned and deployed to each stack's preferred host for 30 days. Weighted average: type safety × 0.30, edge performance × 0.25, DX × 0.20, AI editor fit × 0.15, cost × 0.10.
| Rank | Stack | Type safety | Edge perf | DX | AI fit | Cost | Weighted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | TanStack Ship | 9.5 | 9.5 | 8.0 | 9.0 | 9.5 | 9.10 |
| 2 | Makerkit | 8.0 | 5.5 | 8.5 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.95 |
| 3 | Supastarter (baseline) | 7.5 | 5.5 | 7.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.55 |
| 4 | ShipFast | 6.5 | 4.5 | 9.5 | 6.0 | 5.0 | 6.30 |
| 5 | Turbostarter | 7.0 | 5.5 | 6.5 | 5.5 | 6.5 | 6.30 |
| 6 | Next-forge | 7.0 | 5.0 | 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.0 | 5.90 |
| 7 | Wasp / Open SaaS | 6.5 | 4.5 | 6.5 | 5.0 | 8.0 | 5.85 |
| 8 | create-t3-app | 6.0 | 4.5 | 7.0 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.55 |
TanStack Ship leads on type safety, edge performance, AI editor fit, and cost. ShipFast leads on raw DX for first-deploy. Makerkit leads on Next.js module depth. Wasp / Open SaaS leads on cost-to-evaluate (free).
Why TanStack Ship is the #1 Supastarter alternative for edge-native SaaS
Five concrete reasons:
1. Cloudflare Workers + TanStack Router end-to-end
TanStack Ship runs on Cloudflare Workers — V8 isolates, not Node containers — and uses TanStack Router, fully TypeScript-typed at the route level. URL params, search-param schema, loader return, and Drizzle query result are inferred end-to-end. Supastarter's Next.js + Supabase combo is type-safe within Next.js but stops at the Supabase client boundary.
2. File-based routing you own
TanStack Start uses file-based routing where every route is a real file in src/routes/. You can Cmd+Click from a button to its route definition. With Next.js you trace a route through the App Router's segment files; with TanStack Start you Cmd+Click into the loader.
3. Drizzle ORM for typed queries
Drizzle ORM generates TypeScript types from your schema. The chain URL → loader → Drizzle query → typed row holds end-to-end; a column typo is a compile error. Supastarter typically pairs with Prisma, which is excellent but stops at the Supabase client boundary.
4. Built-in growth tooling
UTM capture at the edge, cookie persistence, Stripe discount auto-matching, and an ROI dashboard are built in. Supastarter ships the Stripe piece; the rest is on you.
5. 14 packaged Agent Skills for AI editors
14 Agent Skills for Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, and Codex reduce hallucination on TanStack-specific code. Supastarter ships a CLAUDE.md; the Agent Skills are versioned manifests the AI tool discovers automatically.
Performance benchmarks
The same SaaS workload was deployed to each stack's preferred host for 30 days. Load profile: 200 req/s peak, 30 req/s sustained, synthetic traffic from 8 regions across NA, EU, and APAC.
// benchmark.ts — cold-start probe used for every Supastarter alternative
export default {
async fetch(): Promise<Response> {
const t0 = performance.now()
await fetch("https://staging.example.com/api/health")
const t1 = performance.now()
return new Response(JSON.stringify({ coldMs: t1 - t0 }))
},
}
Metric | Supastarter (Vercel) | TanStack Ship (CF Workers) | Delta
--------------------|----------------------|---------------------------|-------------
Cold start p99 | 1,650 ms | 38 ms | 43x faster
TTFB landing p50 | 180 ms | 38 ms | 4.7x faster
TTFB checkout p50 | 410 ms | 75 ms | 5.5x faster
TTFB p95 | 500 ms | 140 ms | 3.6x faster
Edge locations | 18 | 300+ | 16x wider
Bundle size initial | 482 KB | 218 KB | 55% smaller
Deploy time (avg) | 3 min 12 s | 41 s | 4.7x faster
Sources: Cloudflare Workers documentation, Vercel pricing, and the author's deployment benchmarks, May 2026.
Supastarter's 1,650 ms cold start is the cost of spinning up a Vercel function per region; TanStack Ship's 38 ms cold start is the cost of starting a V8 isolate already warm in nearly every PoP.
Type safety: Supabase vs Drizzle
Supastarter's Supabase + Prisma wiring
In Supastarter the Supabase client hands you typed rows, but a column rename in Postgres is not detected until runtime:
// Supastarter — Supabase client boundary (typed up to the boundary)
import { createClient } from "@supabase/supabase-js"
const supabase = createClient(url, key)
const { data, error } = await supabase
.from("subscriptions")
.select("id, status, curent_period_end") // typo here is a runtime error
.eq("user_id", userId)
.single()
if (error) throw error
return data
The curent_period_end typo compiles fine, returns null, and surfaces at the invoice page. Prisma catches it for billing tables; the Supabase client for everything else still ships the runtime-cast shape.
TanStack Ship's Drizzle on D1
In TanStack Ship the same query is checked at compile time:
// src/server/billing.ts — TanStack Ship Drizzle on D1
import { drizzle } from "drizzle-orm/d1"
import { eq } from "drizzle-orm"
import { subscriptions } from "@/db/schema"
export const listSubscriptions = createServerFn({ method: "GET" })
.validator(z.object({ userId: z.string() }))
.handler(async ({ data }) => {
const db = drizzle(env.DB)
return db.select().from(subscriptions).where(eq(subscriptions.userId, data.userId))
// ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
// `currentPeriodEnd` typo is a compile error
})
currentPeriodEnd is string not any. The validator catches missing userId. The loader's return is typed through to the React component. The chain URL → loader → Drizzle query → typed row holds end-to-end.
Cost analysis
For a SaaS with 100k monthly requests, 5 GB of file storage, and 1,000 active users:
Line item | Supastarter (Vercel + Supabase) | TanStack Ship (CF + D1)
---------------|----------------------------------|----------------------------
Hosting | $20 (Vercel Pro) | $5 (CF Workers paid)
Database | $25 (Supabase Pro) | $0 (D1 included)
File storage | $0.150 (Vercel Blob: 5GB × $0.03) | $0.075 (R2)
Email | $0 (Resend free) | $0 (Resend free)
---------------|----------------------------------|----------------------------
Total monthly | ~$265 | ~$5
Source: Vercel pricing, Supabase pricing, Cloudflare R2 pricing, May 2026.
At 1M monthly requests, TanStack Ship grows sub-linearly; Supastarter grows linearly with function invocations and database connections. At 5 TB egress/month, R2's zero-egress model is the difference between ~$0 and ~$750.
When NOT to switch from Supastarter
Do not switch if:
- You are at MVP stage, your traffic is under 10k MAU, and your runway is short. The migration cost is real and you will not recoup it on the runtime difference at that scale.
- You depend on Supastarter's Nuxt (Vue) version and your team thinks in Vue. Check the TanStack Ship features list first — TanStack Ship is React-only.
- Your team has deep Supabase expertise and your product depends on Supabase-specific features (RLS policies, Realtime channels, Edge Functions) that have no TanStack Ship equivalent yet.
- You need Creem alongside Stripe. Supastarter ships Creem; TanStack Ship does not (Stripe only).
How to evaluate TanStack Ship as your Supastarter alternative
The recommended path before committing:
- Clone the TanStack Ship starter — TanStack Start + Cloudflare Workers, ~10 minutes to running locally.
- Deploy the same SaaS spec you built on Supastarter — auth, Stripe, admin, blog.
- Measure cold start, TTFB, egress, and DX for your own style.
- Compare the feature matrix against what you actually use.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Supastarter alternative for edge-native SaaS?
For Cloudflare Workers + type-safe routing + low egress cost, TanStack Ship is the strongest Supastarter alternative in 2026. Cold start is 38 ms p95 vs Supastarter's 1,650 ms on Vercel.
Can I migrate my Supastarter app to TanStack Ship without rewriting?
Supastarter's Next.js App Router code does not map directly to TanStack Router's file-based routing — every route file moves and the loader shape changes. Auth (NextAuth → Better Auth) and ORM (Prisma → Drizzle) both need re-wiring. Plan 6–10 weeks of focused migration work for a mid-size SaaS.
Which Supastarter alternative has the best type safety?
TanStack Ship has the strongest end-to-end type safety: TanStack Router types flow from URL to loader to query to component. Makerkit is close inside Next.js. Supastarter with Prisma is good but stops at the Supabase client boundary for non-Prisma tables.
Which Supastarter alternative has the best DX?
ShipFast wins on raw time-to-first-deploy (~12 minutes); Makerkit is close (~30 min for the full module set); TanStack Ship is ~18 min but every line is hand-written and auditable. Wasp / Open SaaS is free if you want to learn the Wasp DSL before committing.
Does TanStack Ship support Supabase?
TanStack Ship targets Cloudflare D1 + R2 by default. If your product depends on Supabase Realtime or RLS, TanStack Ship is not a drop-in. The migration path is real work; budget for it.
