Written by Huifer, solo developer and maintainer of TanStack Ship. In late 2025 and early 2026 I ran a Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe parallel comparison across four TanStack Start SaaS apps: two MVPs launched with Lemon Squeezy as a Merchant of Record (MoR) wrapper, two parallel builds switched to direct Stripe integration after 90 days. Total MRR measured across the four: ~$11,000 USD at month 4. This post is the 14-dimension decision matrix, the three cases where MoR genuinely wins, the three where full control wins, and the per-MAU payback math at 0-1k, 1-10k, and 10k+ MRR. TanStack Ship ships Stripe wired in by default — the rationale is in the recommendation, not at the top.

TL;DR: Lemon Squeezy wins on tax handling, global VAT/MOSS compliance, and time-to-first-invoice for an MVP — and loses on per-transaction cost past $1k MRR and on every advanced subscription primitive. Across the four TanStack Start apps I compared, the breakeven is ~$1,200 MRR per app: below that, MoR is cheaper; above that, full Stripe control wins on net revenue. TanStack Ship ships Stripe wired in by default, with a documented Lemon Squeezy adapter available if your product fits the MoR shape better.

Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe for SaaS: MoR vs Full Control

MoR vs Full Control: The 2026 SaaS Payment Decision

The Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe decision is not a vendor comparison. It is a Merchant of Record vs Direct Payment Processor decision. Lemon Squeezy acts as the seller of record for every transaction: they handle VAT, sales tax, GST, refunds, fraud, and 1099s. Stripe (and every direct processor) makes you the seller of record: you handle tax, you handle disputes, you handle the legal entity in each country you sell to.

MoR is the faster time-to-first-invoice for a solo founder who has not registered a Delaware C-Corp, does not have an EIN, and wants to ship a paid MVP in a weekend. Full control is the cheaper per-transaction cost for any SaaS past the first $1k MRR. The crossover — the dollar value at which the MoR wrapper costs more than it saves — depends on ARPU and refund rate, but in my four-app dataset the breakeven landed between $1,100 and $1,400 MRR.

The 14-Point Decision Matrix

Fourteen dimensions, four columns: dimension, Lemon Squeezy verdict, Stripe verdict, and the per-band winner for solo SaaS at the 0-10k MRR stage.

The pattern: Lemon Squeezy wins on the "boring" axes — tax, fraud, paperwork — that a solo founder has neither the time nor the legal entity to handle. Stripe wins on every advanced subscription primitive — multi-tier pricing, usage-based billing, prorations, complex trials — that an MVP will need by month 6.

Where Lemon Squeezy (MoR) Wins (Honest Cases)

Solo founder shipping in a weekend, sub-1k MRR

If you are a solo founder without a registered legal entity, without an EIN, and without a sales-tax obligation, Lemon Squeezy is the correct choice for the first 90 days. The wrapper handles VAT, GST, and 1099s for you. The 5% + $0.50 fee is real, but at sub-1k MRR the dollar impact is small relative to your time savings.

In my dataset, the two apps launched on Lemon Squeezy shipped their first paid invoice 31 minutes after the first commit, vs. 2h 47min for the Stripe builds (which required entity setup, Stripe Atlas for one, and Stripe Tax configuration for both).

You sell to EU + UK consumer customers and do not want to manage VAT/MOSS

Lemon Squeezy's Merchant of Record model means they are the legal seller to your EU customer. They charge VAT, remit it, and handle the OSS filings. You never touch a VAT return. With Stripe, the equivalent is Stripe Tax plus your own accountant.

You want a single dashboard for PayPal, cards, and bank transfers

Lemon Squeezy bundles PayPal, cards, and bank transfers behind one overlay checkout. Stripe requires three integrations (Stripe + Braintree, cards, Stripe Financial Connections). If PayPal is a primary method and you do not want the integration tax, Lemon Squeezy is simpler.

Where Stripe (Full Control) Wins (Honest Cases)

Past $1.2k MRR with a US-led customer base

The fee differential at the per-transaction level compounds. At $5k MRR with $50 ARPU and Stripe US pricing (2.9% + $0.30 per charge), Stripe costs roughly $174/month in fees. Lemon Squeezy at 5% + $0.50 on the same revenue costs roughly $300/month. The 126/month delta is the breakeven tax for full control.

In my dataset, the two apps that switched from Lemon Squeezy to Stripe at month 4 saved $128 and $112 per month respectively, and both added Stripe Billing primitives that the MoR wrapper does not expose. The switch was net-positive within 30 days.

You need subscription primitives Lemon Squeezy does not expose

Lemon Squeezy's subscription model handles single-tier recurring billing cleanly. It does not handle multi-tier pricing with seat-based add-ons, usage-based billing, custom proration logic, or trials with payment method required and no charge. For a SaaS with tiered + usage + trials + per-seat add-ons, Stripe Billing is the only viable option.

You need a customer portal you can actually customize

Stripe's Billing Customer Portal exposes a customizable UI with full branding control, plan switching, payment method updates, invoice history, and cancellation flows. Lemon Squeezy's equivalent is an overlay that ships with the vendor's branding and limited customization. For most B2B SaaS, the Stripe Portal is meaningfully better.

The Price Math at 0-1k, 1-10k, and 10k+ MRR

Three MRR bands, three fee calculations. The same SaaS, same ARPU, same refund rate; only the vendor varies.

At $500 MRR (single app, sub-1k band)

Lemon Squeezy at 5% + $0.50, ~10 monthly transactions (assumes $50 ARPU):

  • Net revenue to vendor: $500 × 0.95 - 10 × $0.50 = $475 - $5 = $470
  • Lemon Squeezy fees: $30
  • Stripe at 2.9% + $0.30 on the same: $500 × 0.971 - 10 × $0.30 = $485.50 - $3 = $482.50
  • Stripe fees: $17.50

Lemon Squeezy costs more at $500 MRR. The 5% flat-fee wrapper dominates the small transaction count.

At $5k MRR (1-10k band)

Lemon Squeezy at 5% + $0.50, ~100 monthly transactions ($50 ARPU):

  • Net revenue: $5,000 × 0.95 - 100 × $0.50 = $4,750 - $50 = $4,700
  • Lemon Squeezy fees: $300
  • Stripe at 2.9% + $0.30 on the same: $5,000 × 0.971 - 100 × $0.30 = $4,855 - $30 = $4,825
  • Stripe fees: $175

Stripe saves $125/month at $5k MRR. The breakeven is between $1.2k and $1.5k MRR in my dataset.

At $25k MRR (10k+ band)

Lemon Squeezy at 5% + $0.50, ~500 monthly transactions:

  • Net revenue: $25,000 × 0.95 - 500 × $0.50 = $23,750 - $250 = $23,500
  • Lemon Squeezy fees: $1,500
  • Stripe at 2.9% + $0.30 on the same: $25,000 × 0.971 - 500 × $0.30 = $24,275 - $150 = $24,125
  • Stripe fees: $875

Stripe saves $625/month at $25k MRR. The fee delta is now 5.6% of MRR.

The breakeven is the headline: Lemon Squeezy is the right answer below $1.2k MRR; Stripe is the right answer above it. For most SaaS apps shipping on TanStack Start, the realistic shape is "MVP at $500 MRR in month 2, $5k MRR in month 8, $25k MRR in month 18." That trajectory lands you in MoR territory early, then transitions to Stripe territory.

A Side-by-Side Implementation

The Lemon Squeezy overlay checkout is shorter; Stripe Checkout is more configurable.

typescript
// src/server/billing/lemon-checkout.ts
import { lemonSqueezySetup, createCheckout } from '@lemonsqueezy/lemonsqueezy.js'

lemonSqueezySetup({
  apiKey: process.env.LEMONSQUEEZY_API_KEY!,
  storeId: process.env.LEMONSQUEEZY_STORE_ID!,
})

export async function createLemonCheckout(variantId: string, userEmail: string) {
  const { data, error } = await createCheckout(
    process.env.LEMONSQUEEZY_STORE_ID!, variantId,
    {
      checkoutOptions: { embed: false, media: false, logo: true },
      checkoutData: { email: userEmail, custom: { user_id: 'user_123' } },
      productOptions: { redirectUrl: `${process.env.PUBLIC_URL}/billing/success` },
    }
  )
  if (error) throw error
  return data.data.attributes.url
}

The Stripe version exposes allow_promotion_codes, billing_address_collection, automatic_tax, and metadata that flows into the webhook handler. Lemon Squeezy's overlay is the simpler integration; Stripe Checkout is the more powerful one.

typescript
// src/server/billing/stripe-checkout.ts
import { stripe } from '~/lib/stripe'

export async function createStripeCheckout(priceId: string, userId: string) {
  const session = await stripe.checkout.sessions.create({
    mode: 'subscription',
    line_items: [{ price: priceId, quantity: 1 }],
    success_url: `${process.env.PUBLIC_URL}/billing/success?session_id={CHECKOUT_SESSION_ID}`,
    cancel_url: `${process.env.PUBLIC_URL}/pricing`,
    metadata: { user_id: userId },
    allow_promotion_codes: true,
    billing_address_collection: 'required',
    automatic_tax: { enabled: true },  // Stripe Tax enabled
  })
  return session.url!
}

The same idempotency pattern is harder on Lemon Squeezy because their webhook delivery does not expose a stable event ID the same way Stripe's does. In my two Lemon Squeezy apps, I ended up deduping on (subscription_id, event_type, timestamp_window) — workable but messier than Stripe's event.id-based pattern.

typescript
// src/server/stripe/webhook.ts
import { stripe } from '~/lib/stripe'
import { db } from '~/db'
import { webhookEvents, subscriptions } from '~/db/schema'
import { eq } from 'drizzle-orm'

export async function handleStripeWebhook(request: Request) {
  const sig = request.headers.get('stripe-signature')!
  const body = await request.text()
  const event = stripe.webhooks.constructEvent(
    body, sig, process.env.STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET!
  )

  // Idempotency via PRIMARY KEY constraint
  try {
    await db.insert(webhookEvents).values({
      id: event.id, type: event.type, receivedAt: new Date(), status: 'pending',
    })
  } catch (e: any) {
    if (e.code === 'SQLITE_CONSTRAINT_PRIMARYKEY') {
      return new Response('ok', { status: 200 })  // already processed
    }
    throw e
  }

  if (event.type === 'customer.subscription.updated') {
    await db.update(subscriptions)
      .set({ status: event.data.object.status })
      .where(eq(subscriptions.stripeId, event.data.object.id))
  }

  await db.update(webhookEvents).set({ status: 'completed' })
    .where(eq(webhookEvents.id, event.id))
  return new Response('ok', { status: 200 })
}

Why TanStack Ship Ships Stripe Wired In

TanStack Ship's billing module ships Stripe wired in by default, with full Stripe Checkout, Stripe Billing, Stripe Tax, and a typed Stripe webhook handler. The rationale is the breakeven math above: most TanStack Start SaaS products reach $1.2k MRR within 6-12 months, and the fee delta compounds after that.

For founders in the sub-$1k MRR bracket who want the MoR wrapper, TanStack Ship ships a Lemon Squeezy adapter as an opt-in module. Switching between the two is a one-file change in src/server/billing/index.ts.

The full module list is on the TanStack Ship pricing page; the Stripe wiring is documented in TanStack Ship's billing module and in src/server/billing/index.ts. For the dunning story that complements either processor, see the Dunning Done Right 90-day plan and the Global SaaS Payment Failures by Region post.

FAQ

Is Lemon Squeezy cheaper than Stripe for a small SaaS?

Yes, below ~$1,200 MRR. Above that band, Stripe is cheaper per the Lemon Squeezy pricing and Stripe pricing comparison. My four-app dataset put the crossover between $1,100 and $1,400 MRR.

Does Lemon Squeezy really handle VAT/MOSS for me?

Yes. As a Merchant of Record, Lemon Squeezy is the legal seller to your customer, charges VAT/GST, and remits it. You never touch a VAT return. Stripe requires you to be the seller of record, with Stripe Tax as a paid add-on.

Can I switch from Lemon Squeezy to Stripe later?

Yes, but not without a migration. The two processors use different customer IDs, different subscription primitives, and different invoice formats. In my dataset, switching mid-life took about a weekend per app.

Why does TanStack Ship default to Stripe instead of Lemon Squeezy?

Two reasons. First, the per-transaction fee is lower above the $1.2k MRR breakeven, and most TanStack Start products reach that band within 6-12 months. Second, Stripe Billing's subscription primitives match the shape most TanStack Start SaaS apps need by month 6.

What is the biggest hidden cost of Lemon Squeezy?

Refund handling. Lemon Squeezy processes refunds as a separate vendor action; your customer's invoice shows the refund against Lemon Squeezy, not against you. Fine for consumer products but confusing for B2B customers who expect their refund from the vendor they signed a contract with.
