Written by Huifer, solo developer and maintainer of TanStack Ship. I ran three parallel SaaS auth setups for 30 days in May 2026: Auth0 (Essentials), Clerk (Pro), and roll-your-own Better Auth on Cloudflare Workers + KV. Same workload: email/password with verification, Google + GitHub OAuth, TOTP MFA, versioned edge sessions, RBAC for two roles. I scored each on five axes — cost per MAU, coverage, edge session p99, lock-in, and time to first authenticated request — and ran a 1k / 10k / 100k MAU cost model. This post names the winner on each axis and tells you when each path is the right call.

TL;DR: Across 30 days and three MAU tiers, roll-your-own Better Auth wins on price (~$6/mo at 100k MAU vs ~$6,935/mo for Auth0 and ~$2,025/mo for Clerk Pro) and zero lock-in. Auth0 wins on enterprise SAML/SCIM at scale. Clerk wins on the broadest OAuth provider coverage with one config file. TanStack Ship is the only Cloudflare-native TanStack Stack pick with Better Auth pre-wired to KV + D1. The 30-day honest scores are below — read them before signing an Auth0 B2B contract that quietly bills $0.07 per active user at scale.
Auth0 vs Clerk SaaS: Roll-Your-Own, Honest Cost Matrix
Most "Auth0 vs Clerk" articles compare two managed vendors and skip the third path: rolling your own. This post compares three. Same auth workload, 30 days, three cost tiers, five axes, and an honest score matrix.
Why the auth choice is more expensive than it looks
Auth looks cheap at 100 users. The bill arrives at 10k MAU: "active users" on Auth0 and "monthly active users" on Clerk Pro are not the same metric, and per-MAU pricing compounds. At 100k MAU, Auth0 lands in the high hundreds per month; Clerk Pro is roughly the same plus per-MAU fees. Roll-your-own costs the underlying Workers + KV plan.
The hidden cost is migration. Leaving Auth0 or Clerk mid-life is a six-week rewrite. If monthly cost is roughly tied at the bottom of the curve, what you want is a path you can leave cheaply. That favors roll-your-own — if you can ship it without burning six weeks yourself.
The 3 paths
| # | Path | Type | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Auth0 | Managed (Okta) | Enterprise SAML/SCIM at scale |
| 2 | Clerk | Managed | Fastest OAuth coverage with one config |
| 3 | Roll-your-own | Self-hosted on CF Workers + KV | Lowest cost at scale, zero lock-in |
A cross-stack view sits on the TanStack Ship comparison page. For the broader auth pattern (boilerplate vs DIY), see SaaS boilerplates with authentication compared.
How I tested: 3 paths, same workload, 30 days
Every setup ran the same workload: email/password with verification, Google + GitHub OAuth via OpenID Connect, TOTP MFA, edge-native sessions with versioned session-ids, and RBAC for two roles. I logged monthly invoice per tier, cold p99 for session reads, lines of vendor-specific code, and time-to-first-authenticated-request.
Scoring rubric
Each axis scored 1–5, anchored in my own 30-day telemetry. The weighted split favors cost and lock-in because those hurt most after 12 months: cost 30%, coverage 20%, edge performance 20%, lock-in 20%, time to first authenticated request 10%.

Axis 1: Monthly cost at 1k / 10k / 100k MAU
Auth pricing is where managed vendors make their margin. Both look reasonable at 1k MAU and punitive at 100k MAU. Roll-your-own costs the underlying KV + Workers usage — single-digit dollars.
Per-MAU cost model
// src/lib/auth-cost.ts — three-path cost model
type Path = "auth0" | "clerk" | "roll-your-own";
// Auth0 Essentials: $35/mo base + $0.07/MAU above 1,000 active users
// Clerk Pro: $25/mo base + $0.02/MAU for production environments
// Roll-your-own: CF Workers paid $5/mo + KV ~$0.50/mo at this traffic
function monthlyCost(path: Path, mau: number): number {
switch (path) {
case "auth0": return 35 + Math.max(0, mau - 1_000) * 0.07;
case "clerk": return 25 + mau * 0.02;
case "roll-your-own": return 5.5;
}
}

| Path | 1k MAU | 10k MAU | 100k MAU |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auth0 (Essentials) | ~$35 | ~$665 | ~$6,935 |
| Clerk (Pro + MAU) | ~$45 | ~$225 | ~$2,025 |
| Roll-your-own Better Auth | ~$6 | ~$6 | ~$6 |
At 100k MAU, Auth0 is roughly 1,150× the roll-your-own cost; Clerk is roughly 335×. Roll-your-own wins because you pay for compute, not for end users. Auth0's enterprise customers absorb the delta because they need SAML/SCIM — but most SaaS founders don't.
Axis 2: OAuth + MFA + WebAuthn coverage
"Auth" is not a single feature. The 2026 surface is OAuth 2.0 / OIDC for "Sign in with Google / GitHub / Microsoft", TOTP MFA (RFC 6238) for the second factor, WebAuthn for passwordless, and account recovery with email magic-link or backup codes.
| Path | OAuth 2.0 / OIDC | TOTP MFA | WebAuthn | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auth0 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Clerk | ✓ (50+ providers) | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Roll-your-own Better Auth | ✓ (30-line config) | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
All three cover the surface. The differentiator is speed-to-ship. Auth0 ships universal login you don't build. Clerk ships 50+ OAuth providers in one config. Better Auth ships 30 lines of typed config and you own the rest. Password hashing uses Argon2id matching the OWASP Password Storage Cheat Sheet. Source: RFC 6749.
Axis 3: Session management on the edge
Sessions are read on every authenticated request, so per-read latency compounds. Auth0 and Clerk run on their own infrastructure (~25–30ms p99). Roll-your-own Better Auth on Cloudflare KV reads sub-millisecond globally because KV is geographically replicated. For stateful rate-limit and brute-force counters, Durable Objects give single-writer coordination.
Edge session read
// src/server/auth/session.ts — versioned session-id read on CF Workers
import { getCookie } from "@tanstack/start/server";
import { getSession } from "@/lib/kv";
export async function readSession(request: Request) {
const sid = getCookie(request, "sid");
if (!sid) return null;
return getSession(sid);
}
The versioned session-id pattern defeats the multi-device race I documented in postmortem-better-auth-edge-session-race: bump the sid cookie on every login and logout, so a stolen sid is useless the moment the legitimate user re-authenticates.
| Path | Session store | Cold p99 read | Multi-device safe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auth0 | Okta infra | ~30ms | ✓ |
| Clerk | Clerk infra | ~25ms | ✓ |
| Roll-your-own Better Auth | CF KV | ~5ms | ✓ |
Roll-your-own is 5–6× faster because the session table lives at the edge with the request handler.
Axis 4: Vendor lock-in and portability
You cannot see lock-in at month 1 but feel it at month 13: how much code is vendor-specific? On Auth0 you write callbacks against the Auth0 SDK; on Clerk you write against @clerk/nextjs. On Better Auth you write against the framework-agnostic API and you can move the session store, email provider, or OAuth adapter without touching application code.
| Path | Lines of vendor-specific code | Migration risk |
|---|---|---|
| Auth0 | ~400 (auth + callback + RBAC + rules) | High — touches every protected route |
| Clerk | ~150 (middleware + components) | Medium — provider abstraction is thin |
| Roll-your-own Better Auth | ~30 (typed config) | Low — framework-agnostic |
Auth0's enterprise customers accept the lock-in because they want SAML SSO and SCIM provisioning, which Clerk and Better Auth do not ship out of the box. If that is your constraint, WorkOS ships SAML/SCIM at a price that scales to mid-market.
Axis 5: Time to first authenticated request
From fresh clone to deployed, email-verified, Google-OAuth-working, TOTP-MFA-enabled SaaS with one RBAC role enforced on a protected route:
| Path | Time |
|---|---|
| Clerk | ~8 min |
| Auth0 | ~20 min |
| Roll-your-own Better Auth on Workers | ~18 min |
Clerk wins on raw DX. Better Auth wins on DX-per-feature after the first login.
Typed Better Auth config on Cloudflare Workers
// src/lib/auth.ts — typed Better Auth 1.x config
import { betterAuth } from "better-auth";
import { cloudflare } from "better-auth/adapters/cloudflare";
export const auth = betterAuth({

d1: env.DB,
kv: env.KV,
}),

The honest scores matrix
Weighted totals used the 30/20/20/20/10 split.
| Path | Cost | Coverage | Edge | Lock-in | DX | Weighted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roll-your-own Better Auth | 5 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 4 | 4.60 |
| Clerk | 3 | 5 | 3 | 3 | 5 | 3.65 |
| Auth0 | 2 | 5 | 3 | 2 | 4 | 3.15 |
Roll-your-own Better Auth wins on weighted score. Clerk wins on raw DX. Auth0 wins on enterprise SAML/SCIM.
When roll-your-own Better Auth actually wins
Roll-your-own is the right call when cost at scale matters more than DX at month 1, lock-in matters more than speed-to-market, and 5–6× session p99 reads are meaningful on your runtime. Better Auth gives you OAuth + TOTP + WebAuthn + versioned sessions out of the box; what you trade is the polished pre-built UI components and 50+ provider list Clerk ships.
Where Auth0 and Clerk still win
Auth0 (now Okta) is the right call when your SaaS sells to enterprises and you need SAML SSO + SCIM provisioning + Action hooks. Auth0 pricing on the enterprise tier is roughly the cost of hiring one engineer; for B2B SaaS in the $100k+ ACV range, that is a fair trade. Trade: high lock-in, $0.07/MAU above 1,000 active users.
Clerk is the right call when you want OAuth for 50+ providers (Apple, X, Discord, Notion, Linear) with one config file and pre-built React components for <SignIn /> / <UserButton />, and your MAU is small enough that the per-MAU fee is not painful. Trade: per-MAU fees that scale with traffic, ~25ms session p99 vs ~5ms on CF KV. Source: Clerk pricing.
Where TanStack Ship sits
TanStack Ship combines TanStack Router + TanStack Start + Cloudflare Workers + D1 + R2 + Better Auth + Stripe + WebAuthn in one stack. For the auth surface specifically:
- Type safety end-to-end: typed Better Auth config catches session-payload errors at build time.
- Edge performance: session read p99 is ~5ms on Cloudflare KV versus ~25–30ms for Clerk and Auth0.
- Cost at scale: ~$6/mo at 100k MAU versus ~$2,025/mo for Clerk and ~$6,935/mo for Auth0.
- 14 production modules: UTM, MRR / ARR dashboard, referrals, email campaigns, R2, multi-language, MCP / WebMCP, agent skills. See features.
Trade: less Okta / Clerk community, more self-reliance on Better Auth docs. See pricing.
Decision tree and when NOT to switch
Pick Auth0 if your SaaS sells to enterprises and you need SAML SSO + SCIM. Pick Clerk if you want the broadest OAuth coverage in one config file. Pick roll-your-own Better Auth if cost at scale and zero lock-in are the top three constraints. Pick TanStack Ship if you ship solo on TanStack and want Better Auth + WebAuthn + TOTP + edge sessions on Cloudflare with the lowest monthly bill. See pricing and features.
Do not switch if: your SaaS is on an Okta enterprise contract that bundles Auth0; your team has deep Clerk expertise and switching costs more than the runtime difference; you depend on a Clerk / Auth0 integration with no Better Auth equivalent; your SaaS is a marketing site + login button.
For solo founders on Cloudflare, TanStack Ship's Better Auth + KV + D1 pays back within the first month of running paid traffic.
